Some backyards just need a clear purpose. This one started as a patchy, uneven side and back space - the kind of yard that gets ignored because there's no real reason to spend time in it. The homeowners wanted something that worked for the whole family, adults and grandkids included. So that's exactly what we built.

The centerpiece is a large flagstone patio that flows right off the back of the house. We set each stone by hand to get tight, clean joints and a surface that actually holds up under foot traffic. No wobble, no settling gaps. From the patio, a flagstone path leads around the side of the house, stepping up through a gravel-bordered walkway that connects the whole yard together. The detail work on those steps - the way they sit level and flush - that's the kind of thing you don't notice until it's done wrong.

The turf play area runs along the side yard and gives the grandkids a soft, padded spot that stays green and clean no matter how much use it gets. Paired with decorative gravel borders and natural boulders throughout, the whole design hangs together without needing constant upkeep. That's the point. Less mowing, less fussing, more time actually using the space.

What we ended up with is a yard that has distinct zones - a place to sit and relax, a path to move through the space easily, and a dedicated area for the kids to play. The landscape design tied it all together so it feels intentional rather than pieced together. That's the difference between just adding stuff to a yard and actually designing one.

Every backyard has more potential than it shows at first glance. Whether you're working with a tight side yard, an awkward slope, or just a space that's never quite come together, a well-thought-out design changes everything. We do this kind of work because we enjoy seeing a yard finally make sense for the people living in it.
